The week-long event brings the top World Tour professional cycling teams to race on the streets of Adelaide and regional South Australia each January. Adelaide has become a great place for this cycling event, and a great place to ride. A city large enough to have all of the facilities you could want. But it is also small enough for cyclists to take over the precinct for an entire week. Up for grabs are important UCI World Tour points and the Santos Tour Down Under Ochre Leader’s Jersey.

Bikestyle Tours has been an Official Travel Specialist for the Santos Tour Down Under since its inception. We draw on our experience and local knowledge to provide you with the best that Adelaide, South Australia, and the TDU race has to offer.

Like all Bikestyle Tours trips, the itinerary is carefully planned, you can choose between different ride options each day. Our experienced guides, high guide-to-guest ratio and attention to every detail provide guests with great service, every time. Getting around on the bike, help with the bike, following the race, improving your riding and maximising your experiences off the bike are all part of our service.

One of the major highlights of the trip is staying at race HQ – the Adelaide Hilton, along with all the pro-riders, cycling teams, and media.

A great summer holiday, escaping by bike.

  • If you are from Australia, the TDU is the only annual UCI road cycling event where you don’t have to travel overseas to be a part of.
  • If you are from abroad, the TDU allows you to visit one of the most beautiful places in the world – Australia, although we may be biased.
  • Relax with Bikestyle Tours, as our guests have come to expect the highest level of professional guides and meticulous organisation from over 20 years of experience.

2019 race route has been reformatted – the Old Willunga Hill stage is now the final stage on Sunday, while Saturday is now the Challenge Ride. This ensures the Ochre jersey is contested until the end of the final stage. We believe, an exciting new format. Our premium trips have been extended by a day to finish on the Monday.

This Trip will be Escorted by Former Pro-Cyclist, Lorian Graham

Lorian is a survivor and a caring Bikestyle Tours guide. Her insights into women’s racing, highs and lows of the sport are just some of the stories she is able to share. Guests love having Lorian as their guide because her care and encouragement toward them creates something very special about being on the bike. The Adelaide Hills are a special place for Lorian as it was here that she was crowned National Road Cycling Champion.

Day 1 Welcome to Race HQ – Sunday 13th January

You’ll be sharing the elevator, lounge area and the bar with the world’s cycling stars, media and the cycling fraternity at the 2019 Santos Tour Down Under. For this week, the Hilton Adelaide becomes the cycling centre of Australia. 2019 marks the event’s 21st year having grown every year, as has the interest of overseas riders. It is a UCI event like no other.

Your Bikestyle Tours trip starts at Adelaide Airport where our guides will meet you and transfer the short distance to Race HQ – Hilton Adelaide, where we spend the next 8 nights. The Hilton Adelaide is the only location during a Pro Tour event where you can see the stars of cycling in a relaxed atmosphere.

On arrival at our Race HQ our Bikestyle Tours guides will assist your check in and assemble your bike. Whatever help you may need, your caring guides will be on hand. Depending on your arrival time, join us for a short ride through Adelaide this afternoon. Otherwise, take a stroll and explore the city of Adelaide, or the City of Adelaide Tour Village and Bike Expo.

Santos Tour Downunder rider briefing

You’ll have time to freshen up after our ride before heading down to watch the People’s Choice Classic, the traditional pre-race criterium. The atmosphere is electric and the racing is fast so it’s well worth a look! Go earlier and see the Women’s Criterium, which is a great lead up to the Classic.

VIP Access (optional extra) Watch the curtain raiser tonight from the Club Tour viewing platform. With great catering and refreshments, there will be no jostling for position as you enjoy the very best view of the race. This is one of the best value VIP access opportunity this week.

People’s Choice Classic
Bartels Road, Adelaide | 51 km
Start and finish: Adelaide
Start time: 7.00pm
Finish time: 8.01pm ETA

The People’s Choice Classic is a fast-paced closed-circuit road race held as a preview to the Santos Tour Down Under.  Savour the buzz as top international cyclists hit city streets on a tight city circuit of 30 laps, ensuring the action is non stop. See the winning riders’ jersey presentations after the race finish at the Ochre Presentation Podium.

Maybe think about coming a day early and go to the Team Presentation and the Great Opening Concert which is just in front of the Hilton in Victoria Park on Saturday night.

Early on Sunday morning is the Ride Like Crazy charity ride event:

Let us know at the time of booking if you’d a room for Saturday night.

City of Adelaide Tour Village and Bike Expo

Situated directly in front of our hotel is the City of Adelaide Tour Village where the teams make their base for the week. It is a hive of activity. Each night the genius mechanics are at work, catch a glimpse of the riders as they finish for the day, catch-up on all the race results, buy your official race merchandise and take a look at the trade displays.

The outdoor space in the Village will be the hub of the tour. It will be a meeting place for cycling fans, an after-work hangout, a place to catch up on the day’s racing, to see interviews with cycling stars and maybe even get an autograph! Each day there will be an entertainment program showcasing cycling to the fans.

Day 2 Stirling and Mt Lofty – Monday 14th January

Today is the official rest day for the Santos Tour Down Under, so the Pro’s will head out for their training rides during the morning. This is a great time to spot the stars in our hotel lobby on their way to the village before they head out on their bikes. With some luck we may even spot them in the hills this morning on our very own ride.

Our plan is a little more social and aims to ease us into the week of cycling and great food. After breakfast we will set off on a scenic ride before rewarding your efforts with a group lunch. We’ll take one of the easier ways into the hills this morning, enjoying the shade of the trees before a final scenic stop and the fun downhill return to Adelaide. You’ll have time after your ride to freshen up before we head out for a special welcome lunch together.

The greatest thing about riding at the Santos Tour Down Under is the access to the Hills near the city. After a short warm up, you’re climbing and into the cooler temperatures and shaded roads. We’ll have short and longer ride options available today. For those not riding today, you are welcome to have the morning in Adelaide, or join us in the Adelaide Hills visiting some beautiful villages and catching up with our riders along the way.

After lingering over lunch and a few glasses of wine, the afternoon is available to you to explore Adelaide or even head down to the beach for a sunset. Tonight, in Adelaide, you can take in the unique atmosphere of the city on the eve of its biggest annual event.

Day 3 Opening Stage in Adelaide – Tuesday 15th January

The opening stage of the 2019 Santos Tour Down Under starts from North Adelaide, not far from our Race Headquarters. The route of the riders heads northeast toward the iconic Barossa Valley with a hilly stage. Port Adelaide will host the final of today’s stage. The ride along the coast to ‘Port’ is popular with local riders wanting a flat ride. We have great ride options for you today, depending on your riding goal. And the bonus, they both catch up with race in great locations.

For an easier ride, we’ll stick to the flats. We can enjoy a gradual start to the day before riding down to the Stage Start. Professional riders will also be riding to the start, so you’ll share the road with the cycling stars. They’ll make their final preparations in North Adelaide before they head out under neutral conditions – a great photo opportunity. As riders head toward the hills, we’ll head toward the beachfront and outer harbour. We’ll stop for lunch and arrive at Port Adelaide for the stage finish.

Stage One
North Adelaide to Port Adelaide | 132.4 km
Start time: 11.00am
Finish time: 2.22pm ETA
KOM location: Snake Gully, One Tree Hill Rd
Sprint locations: North East Road, Inglewood

Our challenging ride today will head toward the hills, starting off with the beautiful Gorge Road, one of the most popular ways into the Adelaide Hills for cyclists. As we near the summit, we’ll take the short but challenging climb of Torrens Hill – this is another climb that Richie Porte has stamped his authority on the Santos Tour Down Under. It is similar to a climb you’d find in the spring classics races in Europe. After reaching the summit, we’ll cruise through the area known as Tea Tree Gully meeting up with the race at today’s KOM, Snake Gully. After seeing who takes the victory over the king of the Mountains, we’ll follow the riders downhill back to Adelaide. We may just call in for a cold beverage on our way back through Adelaide and catch the final moments of the today’s race on television.

Both of our rides will return to Hilton Adelaide mid afternoon, giving you lots of time to enjoy some of the Après Vélo (after bike) activities in Adelaide. This evening is free for you to enjoy the lively atmosphere of Adelaide, a city transformed during the week of Santos Tour Down Under.

Day 4 Checker Hill – Wednesday 18th January

We’ve eased our way into the week of riding. Today, we’ll head further into the Adelaide Hills to catch one of the climbs that animates the Santos Tour Down Under – Checker Hill. Riders have to negotiate very steep grades to reach the summit. The pain is only short lived, but it is a great location to launch an attack. We will travel to Kersbrook today and watch the race over Checker Hill. For our non-riders, we’ll drive you to Checker Hill this morning enjoying a coffee stop along the way.

Our ride options give you the opportunity to ride Checker Hill. We’ll ride out to the KOM along race route before the race. Our return home is the only difference between rides. The race continues northeast to its finish in Angaston. A hot northerly wind could challenge those racing today. If you’d like to avoid the climbing today, take the van to Gumeracha and ride home.

Stage Two
Norwood to Angaston | 149km
Start time: 11.00am
Finish time: 3.02pm ETA
KOM location: Checker Hill, Kersbrook
Sprint locations: Birdwood and Springton

For those taking our short ride, we’ll finish our ride in Gumeracha after watching the riders race over Checker Hill and we’ll transfer you back to Adelaide. For those wanting more kilometres, we’ll ride back to our hotel from Gumeracha, a mostly downhill run. Both options will return to Adelaide in time to see the finish of today’s stage in the Tour Village.

After the finish you can freshen up and tonight you can take in more of Adelaide’s cycling atmosphere and fine dining.

Day 5 Adventures in the Adelaide Hills – Thursday 17th January

Today’s stage uses some of the nicest cycling roads in the Adelaide Hills. It starts at Lobethal right in the heart of the Hills and it also has a wonderful bakery. The conclusion of the stage is in Uraidla, a great small village with a pub, brewery and wood-fired pizza. Last year, Peter Sagan took victory in Uraidla.

We’ll make our way to the start today in Lobethal, and after the riders head out we’ll make our way toward the finish. We have a long and short ride option for getting to the finish. Our long ride will first head in the opposite direction and climb today’s feature climb of Fox Creek Road.

For our short ride option, you have the option of starting your ride from Lobethal or following a more direct route from Lobethal to the finish in Uraidla. A great village for a stage finish.

Stage Three
Lobethal to Uraidla | 146.2km
Start time: 11.00am
Finish time: 2.39pm ETA
KOM location: Fox Creek Road, Cudlee Creek
Sprint locations: Onkaparinga Valley Road, Charleston

After the race finish and you still feel like riding, we have a ride option back to our hotel. Again, it is mostly downhill. Climbing in the morning and downhill back to your hotel – the Adelaide Hills is a great place to ride. Our transport with custom trailers are available for your the transfer along many parts of today’s ride, from our hotel to the start, to the finish or back to our hotel.

Shortly after returning to the Hilton we’ll head out to a local venue to welcome our guests joining us for the weekend, enjoying some drinks and canapés before dinner. Afterwards, you’ll be free to dine at a restaurant nearby.

Day 6 Stage Stage and the Corkscrew – Friday 18th January

We’ll have a picnic lunch available to you while we wait for the race to come through soon after lunch. While waiting for the race, we’ll see the many amateur cyclists testing their pursuits. The Corkscrew will draw a big crowd and we’ll be there to absorb all of the cycling atmosphere.

After the race comes through, we will follow the many riders back into Adelaide for another evening celebrating cycling culture. Tonight, many will curb their post ride activities and rather look for a carbo-loaded meal and an early night. Tomorrow many will have an early start and long ride for the Challenge Tour.

Stage Four
Unley to Campbelltown | 129.2km
Start time: 11.00am
Finish time: 2.24pm ETA
KOM location: Corkscrew Road, Montacute
Sprint locations: Adelaide Road, Echunga

Day 7 Challenge Tour Ride – Saturday 19th January

We have a big day ahead with the Challenge Tour ride through the Fleurieu Peninsula. After an early breakfast at the hotel we will transfer those participating to the intermediate ride from Myponga 102km and the shorter ride start from Victor Harbor 62km. Those choosing the longer route will ride from the hotel to the start, an easy 8km warm-up pedal from the hotel. All rides finish in the historical town of Strathalbyn.

At the end of the Challenge Tour ride you’ll pass under the race finish arch, maybe pausing to take a photo of your achievement, before collecting your lunch and heading off to the finish area to see the race arrive later this afternoon. Once everyone has arrived and we’ve seen the race finish, it’s a short trip back to our hotel – tired but happy.

For those not doing the Challenge Tour we’ll offer a ride around some of our favourite roads before arriving at the finish area in Strathalbyn, where you’ll be able to greet the riders as they arrive and catch the finish at the end today’s road stage.

Stage Five
Glenelg to Strathalbyn | 149.5km
Start time: 11.30am
Finish time: 3.32pm ETA
KOM location: Main South Road, Sellicks Hill
Sprint locations: Myponga and Inman Valley

If you’d like an easier day, we have an option to ride to the race start along the beaches of Adelaide. A stage start is your best opportunity to see the riders as they are introduced to the spectators and each rider signs on. After seeing the start, it is a short ride back to the hotel and you’ll have the afternoon to relax. If you’re travelling without the bike, we’ll drive you to the stage start. Following the start, we’ll head down to watch the stage finish.

Tonight is the Legends’ Night Dinner (optional extra)

Tonight the Santos Tour Down Under rolls out the red carpet and gives cycling fans the chance to glam up, celebrate and see cycling champions honoured at the annual Legends Night Dinner. This is a unique opportunity to see the big names of cycling and enjoy a great night out. The event is normally hosted by popular commentators Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen. Special guests for this year’s event will be announced at a later date.

Day 8 Old Willunga Hill – Sunday 20th January

2019 Santos Tour Down Under will finish on the summit of Old Willunga Hill. The 3km climb is now famous across the world and a particular Australian rider has made it his own. Riders will make two ascents of the challenging King of the Mountain climb in the final stage.

We have seen some of the most exciting stages on Old Willunga. Richie Porte has stamped his authority on this climb over the past four years. 2014 saw Richie Porte show his climbing prowess winning the stage, with Simon Gerrans finishing 3rd and taking the race lead by one second over Cadel Evans. In 2015 Richie Porte was back in the mix as he took a spectacular stage win over Rohan Dennis by 9 seconds and narrowly missed taking the overall lead of the tour by a mere 2 seconds! In 2016, Richie Porte made it a hat-trick of victories with a 6 sec win over his former Sky teammate. In 2017 and 2018, Richie reigned again. Will he be toppled in 2019?

Stage Six
McLaren Vale to Willunga Hill | 151.5km
Start time: 11.10am
Finish time: 2.58pm ETA
KOM location: Brookman Road, Willunga Hill
Sprint locations: The Esplanade, Snapper Point

This year the overall winner will be crowned at the top of Willunga Hill. The Ochre jersey presentation on the final day is a special occasion and the winner also takes the World Tour ranking leaders position as well.

We’ll take things a bit easier today and offer a couple of ride options. The main ride will be a 60km ride from our hotel, via the race start in McLaren Vale, to the race finish on Willunga Hill.

On arrival at Willunga Hill, you’ll be provided with a delicious Gourmet BBQ picnic lunch and cold drinks right at the finish line on Old Willunga Hill, where the race passes twice and where the race finish will be! We will have plenty of time to socialise and relax in this lovely bush setting while we wait for the race to arrive.

This day is always a highlight of the trip with our great position near the finish line and a gourmet BBQ lunch.
