Who is this trip for?

Over 9 days see 2 stages of the 2014 Giro d’Italia and take part in the annual Gran Fondo Nove Colli. This tour offers an amazing variety of terrain, race viewing and cycling. As with all of our tours you’ll be guided by our expert team of ride leaders, drivers and guides. You will experience the excitement of the Giro d’Italia and see a stage starts and a finish. This tour starts in Florence, Tuscany before moving to Emilia Romagna before heading back to Milan. You will also have the chance to compete in the Nove Colli.

This trip is geared to suit trained cyclists who want to challenge themselves by taking part in the annual Gran Fondo Nove Colli, visit two of the most famous cycling regions of Italy and see a few stages of Italy’s own Grand Tour, the Giro d’Italia. The Gran Fondo Nove Colli is the biggest Gran Fondo in all Europe. This year the number of participants is around 12,000 while always maintaining the safety standards that has distinguished this competition over the years.

Italy is a fabulous country to visit with unequalled scenery, friendly people and of course great food. For the race fan the Giro offers the chance of seeing the riders up close without the crowds that typify its bigger brother, The Tour de France.

As usual Bikestyle Tours we will be offering a minimum of two options per day. One is a ride for those enthusiasts who like to challenge themselves on some climbs and/or longer distances while there is an option for those wanting to take a gentler approach to their cycling and not ride quite as hard or as far!

As with all of our tours you’ll be guided by our expert team of ride leaders, drivers and guides.

Monday, 12 May, 2014: Benvenuti in Italia!

The first day of your trip starts with you meeting us at 11.30 am at Florence airport (Aeroporto di Firenze-Peretola).  Once we have gathered everyone we’ll travel to our first destination, our beautiful hotel for the next few days in Montaione, a small medieval village in the Tuscan hills.

The strategic position makes it easy to reach the most famous art cities like Florence, Siena, and Pisa. The much celebrated San Giminiano and Volterra towns are nearby. The Tuscan mansion has been completely restored into a 4 star hotel including all the modern comforts with a relaxing and charming stay with a panoramic swimming pool and a restaurant with vaulted brick ceilings serving typical Tuscan cuisine and Chianti wine from the surrounding hills.

On arrival at the hotel the first thing to do will be to assemble your bike, or meet your rental bike, before we head off for an easy ride to test out your bike and legs.  Our ride will be about 40 kms over some quiet local roads finishing with a coffee before returning to the hotel. It’s a rest day in the Giro so no need to rush back to see the race.

Tonight there will be a welcome dinner in the hotel where you can meet up with the staff that will be looking after you on the trip and also your fellow travelers.

Tuesday, 13 May 2014: In the Footsteps of Leonardo Da Vinci

This morning you wake up in beautiful Tuscany. It is one of the most beautiful regions in Italy, with medieval villages sitting atop hilltops, rolling hills covered in vineyards producing some of the best wines in the world and farmhouses and villas at the end of cypress-lined lanes.

So after a hearty breakfast we will set off for our first ride. Fabrizio, our Tuscan born and bred guide will be taking us on one of his favourite rides along the quiet roads, passing beautiful villages to the birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci, the village of Vinci where we will pause for lunch and also the possibility to visit the Museum and the house of Leonardo Da Vinci.

Vinci is surrounded by the Tuscan hills in a landscape of vineyards and olive groves that are much the same as in Leonardo’s time.
Leonardo da Vinci was born on 15 April 1452, in a farmhouse about 3 kilometres from the town, between Anchiano and Faltognano. His full name was “Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci”, which means “Leonardo, son of Piero, of Vinci”. Half a million visitors a year come to visit the Museum of Leonardo and his birthplace.

Our ride will start and finish at the hotel. Afterwards we can relax and watch the rest of the race live on TV with a stage from Giovinazzo to Bari in the deep south.

Wednesday, 14 May, 2014: San Gimignano

Another great ride today through the beautiful Tuscan countryside will see us riding to the classic Tuscan hilltop village of San Gimignano, one of the most beautiful villages in all of Europe. Known as the Town of Fine Towers, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of San Gimignano is famous for its medieval architecture including its well preserved tower houses that along with its hilltop setting and encircling walls form an unforgettable skyline.

It’s not an easy ride but at the top of every hill you will be rewarded with a great view or another magnificent Tuscan village. Our ride will again start and finish at the hotel and as we did yesterday we can relax and watch the rest of the race from Taranto to Viggiana live on TV.

Thursday, 15 May, 2014: One More Tuscan Ride

After two days of exploring the north, today we head south. We will leave from the hotel by bike for one of the finer but lesser known hilltop towns, Volterra.
It is tucked away in the heart of Tuscany only a short distance from Florence. Idyllically set amidst an evocative landscape of soft rolling hills and lush woodland defined by barren, deep clay walled chasms gullies and ravines. Volterra, 545 metres above sea level, dominates and divides the Cecina and Era valleys. It still retains its medieval character, charm and atmosphere.

On our way we will again be riding through beautiful landscapes passing through the old fortified city of Castelfalfi and the town of Montecatini Val di Cecina with its many architectural structures dating to the medieval period.

This will make a ride of about 90 kilometres. Don’t worry… we will not miss our cappuccino on the way!

Riding to Montepulciano Tuscany Italy

Friday, 16 May, 2014: Off to the Nove Colli

After breakfast this morning we will leave for Milano Marittima in the Emilia Romagna region. Emilia Romagna is popular with cyclists from all over Europe. It is an area with some beautiful rides and home to Italy’s oldest and largest Gran Fondo, the Nove Colli, which many of us will be riding on Sunday.

We only need an easy ride today in preparation for Sunday so when we arrive at our hotel we will take a short ride down the beach for a coffee and cruise back home.

The former holiday destination of Milan’s high society, Milano Marittima has become an exclusive and glamorous seaside resort featuring outstanding natural beauties and high-quality tourist services and facilities. Our hosts tonight are experts at looking after the need of cyclists and on our previous visits here we have been served excellent food with great accommodation. Perfect for a big weekend on the bike!

Saturday, 17 May, 2014: Stage Finish

Today we get our first glimpse of the Giro with the 174 kms stage from Foligno to Montecopiolo. There are 3 climbs in the final 50 kms of the route so expect a great finish with the peloton spread out for miles!

First things first though and this morning we will ride the 15 km to Cesenatico to collect our race packs and have a look at the expo and then ride back. You’ll be astounded by the number of cyclists in town for the event, with around 12,000 people taking part in tomorrow’s event.

Then this afternoon we leave the bikes at home and head out to see the race on the final circuit where all the climbing is. It’s about an hour away so a great opportunity to see it.

Sunday, 18 May, 2014: Nove Colli Gran Fondo

This morning those entering the Gran Fondo Nove Colli will rise very early and ride the short distance to Cessanatico to take up our position close to the start line of the event. As it is only 15 kms to the start it will be quicker to ride due to traffic restrictions near the start area, plus of course you’ll start the event with warm muscles and raring to go!

There are two options for the Nove Colli, 130km (80 miles) or 200km (124 miles). We will schedule pick up times and location for your transport back to the hotel after the ride. The event will have many many riders, all keen to do a good time and enjoy the day. Take care over the first kms of the route as it will be crowded and while you may be a skilled rider, you never know about the person in front or behind you. So take it easy and have an enjoyable and safe day and we will be at the finish to meet you. The organisers will have refreshments and even a bowl of pasta waiting for you. We will gather you into groups and run a shuttle service back to the hotel unless of course you want to ride!

Tonight you can enjoy a well earned drink and look back on the great achievement that doing the Nove Colli is!

For those not competing today we will have a more leisurely day with a ride out into the hills to explore the hilltop towns of the region and maybe cheer on the riders who are competing today.

Overnight: Milano Marittima
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Monday, 19 May, 2014: Ferrari Factory Tour

The “Main Event” for us today will be a visit to the iconic Italian sports car manufacturer, Ferrari. The Ferrari Museum in Maranello offers its visitors an exclusive guided bus tour inside the Fiorano test-track proving grounds and Viale Enzo Ferrari, an avenue which runs through the cluster of new production and other buildings making up the Ferrari “Cittadella”. A Museum guide will introduce you to the various characteristics and features of the circuit where Ferrari has done its road and competition car testing since 1972, and to the Ferrari Factory where the Prancing Horse cars are built.

Completely renovated and now with more exhibition space, the Museo Ferrari in Maranello anticipates the museum of the future: not just a collection of the past, but an extraordinary experience of the world of Ferrari, where the historical cars and history are the pretext to understand and get to know today’s models, Formula 1 content and technology and the outlook towards the future.

This morning we will have a short morning ride along the coast road if you wish. We will just go out for a hour to get the stiffness out of our legs after yesterday.

Tonight we will stay in Modena in preparation for the stage start tomorrow. It’s our last night and our final dinner together so we will host a special farewell dinner of local cuisine and some great Italian wines.

Overnight: Modena
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Tuesday, 20 May 2014: Stage Start and Arrivederci

This morning we will have our final ride for the trip with a spin in the countryside before heading off to the race start in Modena.

Ciao Ciao Italia. This afternoon we will transfer you to Malpensa Airport.
It’s 250 kilometres and we need to allow 4 hours in case of traffic so if you are booking a flight that departs Milan Malpensa Airport do not book a flight that departs before 6:00pm.

Its farewell to your new friends as our tour comes to an end this morning after breakfast. During your time with us you’ve challenged yourself in one of the biggest Gran Fondo’s in the world, experienced the excitement of the Giro, seen the home of Ferrari and ridden some of the most beautiful roads in Italy.

If you have the time why not extend your trip with a day or two in Milan or join our trip to the Dolomites?

A great article from David Roche who came with us in 2012

Grazie and Pat
Thanks heaps for a top tour. I loved it! You were great hosts and leaders.
We are enjoying La Tour at the moment and thinking enviously of you…..

Thank you Bikestyletours for a fantastic Giro 2013. Under trying weather conditions Pat and his team made this a trip to forever remember the daily changes to our itinerary were handled so well it was like it was the original schedule. The accommodation was first class and nothing was a problem for Pat and his team Grace Liz and Fabrizio. And the Bus driver what a legend, will always remember the drive thru the blizzard going to Aprica.
Thanks to everyone for a trip ofa lifetime (till next year)

I would like to thank you very much – we all had a great tour and enjoyed the full trip. In particular I would like to make mention of Sarah and Grace and Patrick – they were all excellent and each provided a different but unique experience to the tour. Sarah’s bubbly Italian character was perfect to showcase Italy. I think we would all happily take her back to Australia with us. We were very lucky to have Patrick along for the rides – without him and his GPS I think you would be still trying to find us. Grace’s knowledge of wines was superb whilst her stewardship kept us all on track.

Hi Natalie,
Thank you for writing, I personally had a great trip and the memories will stay with me for a long time, if I am fortunate enough to be able to do another trip in the future it will be hard to decide between the Giro or TDF!

Hi Natalie and the team.
My sincere thanks go to you and the team. I had a truly outstanding time and it was an amazing experience, one where I can’t wait until Scott (my partner) can join me for another Bikestyle Tour.
Laurie, yourself, Pat, Grace and Sim were all sensational, everything ran smoothly and we couldn’t have been better looked after. I was only sad it had to come to an end. I have fond memories of the trip and had a fantastic time.
The organisation, energy, enthusiasm, care and attention you give your clients is exceptional – in my view you have a winning formula. The rides were awesome, the hotel accommodation of a high standard, the tour guides fantastic in every way. Well done to you and the team.
Kind regards
