TDU People's Choice Classic

Your Bikestyle Tours package starts by us meeting you at Adelaide Airport followed by our transfer to Race HQ, at the Adelaide Hilton hotel where we spend the next 7 nights.

Welcome to the Santos Tour Down Under and Race Headquarters, the Adelaide Hilton.
The Hilton Adelaide Hotel is the Santos Tour Down Under’s official host hotel. From early January 2014, the world’s cycling stars, media and the cycling fraternity will converge and transform the Hilton Adelaide into the cycling centre of Australia.

The Hilton Adelaide is the only place to see the stars of cycling in a relaxed atmosphere, whether it is in the lift, the Lobby Lounge or at the Bar.
All the media and the Media Centre are here as well so if you are keen for the latest news, look no further!

Beautifully located overlooking Victoria Square and the Adelaide City Council Tour Village, Hilton Adelaide is at the heart of the city’s entertainment, shopping and dining precincts and right next door to the vibrant Adelaide Central Market.

Relax… Designed with the discerning traveller in mind, Hilton Adelaide’s guest rooms are stylish and fresh and set the standard for accommodation in South Australia. The hotel also boasts a great variety of leisure facilities, including a gym, sauna and plunge pool, plus an outdoor heated swimming pool and full size tennis court.

Drink… Hilton Adelaide also offers two bars, open 7 days a week until late, serving the finest wines, creative cocktails and great snacks. The Collins Bar is one of Adelaide’s hottest night spots, overlooking the Tour Village in Victoria Square. It’s the perfect location to soak up the atmosphere.

On arrival in Adelaide our Bikestyle Tours staff will meet you at the airport and transport you to the hotel where you can check in and get your bike assembled. If you need help we will be on hand.

Depending on your arrival time you can join us for a short ride along the beaches around 2:00pm this afternoon, or take a stroll through the nearby Rundle Mall and explore the city.

Later in the afternoon we will head down to watch the Down Under Classic, the traditional pre race criterium. The atmosphere is electric and the racing is fast so it’s well worth a look! If you are a Club Tour member we will get away a little earlier to get you to your hospitality in plenty of time.

You also might want to go earlier to see the Women’s Criterium which is always a great lead up to the Down Under Classic.

Maybe think about coming a day early and go to the Team Presentation and the Great Opening Concert which is just in front of the Hilton in Victoria Park and on Saturday night and then follow up with the Ride Like Crazy early on Sunday morning. It’s a great event and all for Charity: http://www.ridelikecrazy.com/

Saturday Night Programme
Time: 6:00pm – 9:00pm
Location: Adelaide City Council Tour Village and Bike Expo
After checking out all the exhibitors in the Adelaide City Council Tour Village and Bike Expo, head to the main stage and see all the 2014 teams presented to the public for the first time. You’ll also hear from a few of your favourites.

Following the team presentation, secure your position at the front of stage to kick on at the opening night concert. With Sneaky Sound System opening the 2013 event, who will get the party started in 2014? Full concert details will be announced later.
If you would like us to book you a room for Saturday night you can book it with your trip in the Reservations Form below.

Adelaide City Council Tour Village and Bike Expo

Also situated directly in front of our hotel in the newly re-developed Victoria Square will be the Adelaide City Council Tour Village and Bike Expo.

This is where the teams make their base for the week. It is a hive of activity. Each night be sure to watch the genius of the mechanics at work, catch a glimpse of the riders as they finish for the day (don’t forget your autograph book!), catch-up on all the race results, buy your official race merchandise and take a look at the trade displays.

The outdoor space in the Tour Village will be the hub of the tour. It will be a meeting place for cycling fans, an after work hang out, a place to catch up on the day’s racing, to see interviews with cycling stars and maybe even get an autograph! Each day there will be an entertainment program showcasing cycling to the fans.

Watch team mechanics at work as they prepare the bikes for the upcoming stage. Catch the daily race highlights on the big screen and check out the range of sponsor displays. There is ample seating and a vibrant social atmosphere where you can grab a bite to eat or have a drink with your friends.

The bike expo is an interactive, engaging exhibition. You’ll have the opportunity to test ride the latest bicycles around the streets of Adelaide, check out the latest cycling gear, get inspired and equip yourself like the pros.

Club Tour Members
Watch the curtain raiser tonight, the Peoples Choice Classic, from the Club Tour viewing platform. With great catering and refreshments, there will be no jostling for position as you enjoy the very best view of the race.

We will have your Club Tour, Mutual Challenge and Legends Dinner tickets available for you on arrival.

Monday 20 January – Rest Day

Serafino

This is the official rest day for the Santos Tour Down Under so the Pros will be heading out for their training rides during the morning. This is a great time to spot the star as they meander through the lobby on their way to the village to get their bikes and head out.

We will also be heading out to stretch our legs today with a ride through the beautiful Adelaide Hills and onto McLaren Vale for lunch and wine tasting at Serafino Wines. Set in a stunning location, with fine hospitality and a contemporary menu full of international flavours, Serafino Restaurant offers a superb dining experience. Serafino encompasses more than 300 acres under vine, producing outstanding wines that express the individual qualities of the region.

Highly regarded for traditional McLaren Vale varieties, Serafino produces Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Grenache and Merlot. Other varietals thriving at Serafino include Fiano, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Montepulciano, and a singular row of Barbera all of which reflect the family’s Italian heritage.

We will discuss options and do one hilly long ride of around 80km up into the hills around Mt Lofty and Hahndorf and another more direct option of around 50km.

For those wanting something a bit less strenuous the bus will be available as well!

This afternoon, after our lunch at the winery, we will transfer back to the Adelaide Hilton in the comfort of our bus.

Tonight is free in Adelaide to take in the unique atmosphere of the city on the eve of its biggest annual event.

Non Cyclists:
Most of this morning is at leisure until we head off in the bus to McLaren Vale to meet up with the cyclists and enjoy our special welcome lunch at Serafino Wines.

Stage One of the 2014 Tour Down Under will head north to the iconic Barossa Valley for a circuit race that will include the infamous Menglers Hill in its final loop.

We will leave the hotel by bus and travel to the start in Nuriootpa stopping along the way to drop off those wanting a nice 80 kilometre through the edge of the Adelaide Hills and the Barossa Valley. The longer ride won’t arrive in time to see the start but will have the opportunity to do a lap of the course and see the race as we go and including a trip up Mengler’s Hill to see what the fuss is about! Then we will head onto Angaston for a well earned lunch.

For those doing the shorter ride, starts are a great opportunity to see the riders and all the activity before they go into battle out on the road. Once we have seen the race away we will head in the same direction and do a loop of the course, stopping to see the riders in a few locations before returning to the location of today’s finish and the very pretty town of Angaston for lunch while we watch the race pass. After lunch (for those who would like) we will head out to tackle Menglers Hill. If it’s a nice day we will probably choose to stop and see the race here on the final lap. There’s sure to be action a plenty! If it’s a warm day we will continue onto the finish in Angaston and see the race there.

After the race is won and the jerseys for the different category winners are on the shoulders of the riders we will leave and head back to Adelaide. There is the possibility of a winery visit if time allows.

Non Cyclists:
We will head out from the hotel with the cyclists to see the start followed by a leisurely lunch at Angaston where we will see the race pass on multiple occasions before it finishes in Angaston.

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch

TDU Feed

Another great day in the Adelaide Hills for us with a number of ride options and a bus going to see the race finish at one of South Australia’s prettiest towns, Stirling.

This morning our longer ride will be a hilly 65 kms that will go via Norton Summit and along Basket range road to Lobethal where we will join the race course and head for Stirling with a compulsory stop at beautiful Hahndorf to try the tasty treats in its famous German Bakery. Fully refreshed we will head across to see the multiple laps of the race and the finish in Stirling. It’s always a great atmosphere and finish to match.

If you are up for it try a lap of the 22 kms circuit and see the riders from another location before returning to Stirling to see the finish.

The second option is a 32 kms ride up to Stirling via the South Eastern Freeway bike path (it’s nicer than it sounds!) and enjoy a few hours watching the race as it makes its multiple laps through the town. It’s a bit of a climb up the path but if you take your time it won’t tax you too much.

We will set up in the park on the race course where you will be able to congregate and get some light refreshments. For lunch we suggest you try a local cafe in the town. The local restaurants will have street stalls with lots of local produce to tempt your taste buds!

At the end of the day after the race it’s back to the bike path to join the other race fans and also the teams as descend to Adelaide. It’s a lot of fun but take care, especially if you see a pro rider coming up behind you – these guys have no fear and take no prisoners! Or if you have had enough for one day take the bus back to the Hilton.

So all up for the day our ride options vary from 32 kms to over 100 kms.

Non Cyclists:
This morning we will have a little tour of the Adelaide Hills as we make our way up to Stirling. We will have a stop for morning in Hahndorf before continuing to Stirling where the race will pass through multiple times. Stirling is a pretty town of the Adelaide Hills with lots of nice shops, parkland and a terrific atmosphere on race day.

Thursday 23 January – Stage 3 – Norwood to Campbelltown (145 km)

Start and finish: Norwood to Campbelltown
Start time: 11am (The Parade, at Town Hall)
ŠKODA King of the Mountain: Corkscrew Road at Montacute Road, Montacute
Sprint locations: Scott Street, Kersbrook and Mt Crawford Road near Carlisle Street, Williamstown
Feed station: Melrose Street, Mt Pleasant
Finish time: 2.56pm ETA
Race distance: 145km

TDU Start

It’s a great stage to see today and again we will see it twice but hopefully without stressing our legs too much before the Bupa Challenge Tour tomorrow.

This morning we will first be going to see all the excitement of the start, a short distance from the hotel in Norwood. It’s always a great atmosphere here with the cafes and the excitement of the race start. This is one of the best chances of seeing the riders as the sign on and make their way to the race start area. Bring a pen and something for your favourite rider to sign.

We will head across to Norwood a little earlier so we can have a coffee and a bite of morning tea before we see the start and head off for our ride. After the start we have the option of returning to the hotel to rest up for tomorrow or heading out to see the race on the famous Corkscrew Road climb.

If you choose to see the race again we will ride towards Campbelltown where the race will finish later on and then up the Gorge Road to the final and most brutal climb of the day, The Corkscrew. A well known climb to Adelaide cyclists, this is the second time that the aptly named Corkscrew Road has been used in the Tour Down Under. This steep 2.4 km climb reaches 15% and has an average gradient of 9.4% from the northern approach via Gorge Road, making it perhaps the toughest climb seen at the race. It will be a great place to view the race, with the summit only 7 kms before a fast downhill run see the race finish in the suburb of Campbelltown.

For those who head across to the Corkscrew we will provide a picnic lunch at the top of the climb. So there’s a bit of incentive to get to the top!

After the race it’s a leisurely ride back to the hotel for a relax before tomorrow.

Tonight we will welcome those joining us for the long weekend with pre-dinner drinks and appetizers at a local wine bar. You’ll then be free to dine at a restaurant of your choice for a bit of pre-race carbo loading before tomorrow’s Bupa Challenge event.

Non Cyclists:
We will head across to Norwood a little earlier so we can have a coffee and a bite of morning tea before we see the start. After the start we will be on our way up to see the race on the famous Corkscrew Road climb.

Meals: Breakfast and Picnic Lunch

Friday 24 January – Bupa Stage 4 – Unley to Victor Harbor (148.5 km)

TODAY IN THE RACE
Date: Friday 24 January 2014

Finish time: 2.55pm ETA
Race distance: 148.5km

The 2014 Bupa Challenge Tour (optional extra) will finish in Victor Harbor with 4 different distances on offer. Bikestyle Tours will provide transfers to each start leaving the hotel no later than 5:30am (yes you read it right). We will confirm exact times the day before.

TDU Victor Harbor

Those doing the “Full Monty” will ride the short distance from the hotel to Unley and those starting from Meadows, Mount Compass and Yankalilla will head off in the bus.

For those not doing the Bupa Challenge Tour we will spend the day checking on our riders along the course before heading to the finish to greet them and then see the finish. Alternatively you may wish to spend the day in Adelaide.

We will arrive at Victor Harbor in time to see the race finish. We will watch the finish of the race and then head back to Adelaide.

Victor Harbor is one of South Australia’s most accessible coastal playgrounds. The town, which overlooks historic Encounter Bay and the Southern Ocean, is a short drive from Cape Jervis and the ferry to Kangaroo Island. The approach from Melbourne is one of the most attractive journeys in Australia, especially along the coast and through the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Victor Harbor has a classic Mediterranean climate that is moderated by its proximity to the Southern Ocean, which provides cooling sea breezes at the end of each warm summer’s day.

Non Cyclists:
This morning we will take a drive down to Victor Harbor to see the race finish. It’s a great little town with things to do and see before the race arrives in the early afternoon.

Meals: Breakfast and lunch provided by the organisers.

Saturday 25 January – Stage 5 – McLaren Vale to Willunga Hill (151.5km)

TODAY IN THE RACE
Date: Saturday 25 January 2014
Start and finish: McLaren Vale to Willunga Hill
Start time: 11.10am (Main Road, near Tatachilla Road)
Finish time: 3.02pm ETA, Willunga Hill
ŠKODA King of the Mountain:  Willunga Hill
Sprint locations: The Esplanade, Snapper Point (2 sprints)
Feed station: Main Road Willunga at Kell Street
Race distance: 151.5km

TDU BBQ

Today’s TDU stage heads back to the Fleurieu Peninsula. This region boasts that it “has it all”, so we should be in for a contrasting days racing and riding. For the 3rd year running the cyclists will finish Jayco Stage 5 at the top of Old Willunga Hill after a challenging ŠKODA King of the Mountain climb. If the last 2 years are anything to go by this should be a spectacular finish and possibly decisive in the race leadership. In 2012 Simon Gerrans was narrowly beaten across the line by Alejandro Valverde after a duel over the final 200 meters but Gerrans gained the Ochre Jersey and went on to win the tour. In 2013 Gerrans was again involved in a nail biter but this time came out on top to win the stage but not the race.

We’ll probably take things a bit easier today, after yesterday’s ride, and save our energy for tonight’s party. We will offer a couple of ride options, a 60 km ride from our hotel, via the race start in McLaren Vale,  to the race finish on Willunga Hill, with the option of riding back to the hotel at the end of the day for a 60km return ride. There is also an option if we arrive at Willunga Hill in time to do a lap of the 22km race loop down to Willunga and back to the hill top finish.

On arrival at Willunga Hill you’ll be provided with a delicious Gourmet BBQ picnic lunch and cold drinks right at the finish line on Old Willunga Hill where the race passes twice and where the race finish will be! We will have plenty of time to socialise and relax in this lovely bush setting while we wait for the race to arrive.

This day has been a highlight of the trip for all those travelling on our trips with our great position near the finish line and a gourmet BBQ.

Non Cyclists:
Travel to McLaren Vale this morning to see the stage start, then continue on to Willunga Hill to meet the cyclists for lunch. If time allows there will be the opportunity to visit one of the McLaren Vale vineyards this morning.

Tonight is the Legends’ Night Dinner (optional extra).

Tonight the Santos Tour Down Under rolls out the red carpet and gives cycling fans the chance to glam up, celebrate and see cycling champions honoured at the annual Legends Night Dinner. This is a unique opportunity to see the big names of cycling and enjoy a great night out. The event is normally hosted by popular commentators Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen. Special guests for this year’s event will be announced at a later date.

Venue: Adelaide Convention Centre
Time: from 7.30pm

If you are going to the Legends Dinner this evening we will transfer you to the venue at 6.30pm from outside the hotel. Taxis will be available for you to return when you wish.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Sunday 26 January – Stage 6 – Adelaide City Circuit (passing Hilton) (95 km)

TODAY IN THE RACE
Date: Sunday 26 January 2014
Start and finish: Adelaide
Start time: 1.15pm*
Sprint locations: Bartels Road, Rymill Park
Finish time: 3.15pm* approximately
Race distance: 95km
A new city circuit waits for the final Santos Tour Down Under stage of 2014, the unique circuit will see the world’s best cyclists race through the CBD and along King William, Pirie, Flinders and Wakefield streets. With big screens to show the action as it happens, enjoy the atmosphere as the overall race winner is decided. It couldn’t get any better for us (staying at the race HQ, the Hilton) as the race will pass by us on each of it’s 20 laps.

TDU Caravane

This is the last official day of our trip. For those of you departing later today there is the chance to see the final stage of the 2014 Santos Tour Down Under in the streets of Adelaide.

Today’s stage is usually full of action, as it is the last chance for race glory and where all of the classifications will be decided. There are plenty of opportunities to see the racing as the riders hurtle around laps of the street circuit, taking in the view of Adelaide’s city skyline. You can see all of the action on the Big Screen and there are areas to enjoy local food, wine and entertainment. After the race are the presentations where you’ll have a chance to take a last few photos of the winners to show all your friends and club mates when you get home.

With the race circuit on our doorstep the plan for this morning is to do a lap or two around the 4.75 km street circuit of today’s stage (subject to road being open). We’ll make do with one or two laps while the pro’s will do many more as they fight it out for victory in this afternoon’s stage.  For those who would like a bit more we will head down for a ride along the beaches of Adelaide, before returning to the hotel for breakfast.  After we return from our ride the rest of the morning is free until we go to see the final stage at 12.30pm.

Don’t forget if you are leaving today there is the unfortunate job of packing your bike which always means a good trip is coming to an end soon.

If you have decided to stay on tonight and would like us to book you a room please add it to your cart when making your trip booking in the Reservations Form below.

Non Cyclists:
A leisurely morning start with time to read the Sunday papers in bed if you like! We will head down to see the final stage around midday.
