Your Bikestyle Tours package starts by us meeting you at Adelaide Airport followed by our transfer to Race HQ, at the Hilton Adelaide where we spend the next 3 nights.  The Hilton Adelaide Hotel is the Santos Tour Down Under’s official host hotel. In January 2016, the world’s cycling stars, media and the cycling fraternity will converge and transform the Hilton Adelaide into the cycling centre of Australia.

The Hilton Adelaide is the only place to see the stars of cycling in a relaxed atmosphere, whether it is in the lift, the Lobby Lounge or at the Bar. All the media and the Media Centre are here as well so if you are keen for the latest news, look no further! Beautifully located overlooking Victoria Square and the Adelaide City Council Tour Village, Hilton Adelaide is at the heart of the city’s entertainment, shopping and dining precincts and right next door to the vibrant Adelaide Central Market.

On arrival in Adelaide today the Bikestyle Tours staff will meet you at the airport and transfer you to the hotel where you can check in and get your bike assembled. In the afternoon we’ll take a light spin to get the travel fatigue out of your legs. Our likely destination is down to the beachside suburbs of Glenelg and Henley Beach, a nice easy ride with the promise of a sea breeze and coffee with a view.

Tonight we will have welcome drinks and appetizers at a local wine bar for the chance to meet your fellow tour guests. After our get together the rest of the evening is free to dine at a restaurant of your choice for a bit of pre-race carbo loading before tomorrow’s Bupa Challenge event.

Adelaide City Council Tour Village and Bike Expo

Also situated directly in front of our hotel in the newly redeveloped Victoria Square will be the Adelaide City Council Tour Village and Bike Expo.

This is where the teams make their base for the week. It is a hive of activity. Each night be sure to watch the genius of the mechanics at work, catch a glimpse of the riders as they finish for the day (don’t forget your autograph book!), catch-up on all the race results, buy your official race merchandise and take a look at the trade displays.

The outdoor space in the Tour Village will be the hub of the tour. It will be a meeting place for cycling fans, an after work hang out, a place to catch up on the day’s racing, to see interviews with cycling stars and maybe even get an autograph! Each day there will be an entertainment program showcasing cycling to the fans.

Watch team mechanics at work as they prepare the bikes for the upcoming stage. Catch the daily race highlights on the big screen and check out the range of sponsor displays. There is ample seating and a vibrant social atmosphere where you can grab a bite to eat or have a drink with your friends.

The bike expo is an interactive, engaging exhibition. You’ll have the opportunity to test ride the latest bicycles around the streets of Adelaide, check out the latest cycling gear, get inspired and equip yourself like the pros.

Bupa riders start

The 2016 Bupa Challenge Tour (optional extra) will finish in Victor Harbor, with 3 ride distances for you to choose from today.

The 3 different ride options we offer this year are:

Norwood to Victor Harbor
Total Distance 142.4km
Echunga to Victor Harbor
Total Distance 1ookm
Strathalbyn to Victor Harbor
Total Distance 70km

After an early breakfast at the hotel we will provide transfers to the 100km ride start at Echunga and the 70km ride start in Strathalbyn. Those choosing the longer 142 km route will ride from the hotel to the start, and easy 4km warm-up pedal from the hotel.

At the end of the Bupa Challenge Ride you’ll pass under the race finish arch, maybe pausing to take a photo of your achievement, before collecting your lunch and heading off to the finish area to see the race arrive later this afternoon. Once everyone has arrived and we’ve seen the race finish it’s back to Adelaide for the evening, tired but happy.

For those not doing the Bupa Challenge Tour today we will offer a transfer this morning to Victor Harbor, where you will be able to greet the riders as they arrive and catch the sprint finish at the end of the race’s longest road stage for 2016. If you feel like a ride you can bring your bike along and join us on a ride out in to the countryside surrounding Victor Harbor, returning to town for lunch and to see the race. Alternatively if you prefer you can choose to stay in Adelaide today and enjoy all the city has to offer, saving your legs for tomorrow’s Willunga Hill ride.

Non Cyclists: This morning we will drive to the beautiful seaside town of Victor Harbor to cheer our group as they complete the Bupa Challenge. We will be able to enjoy one of the many restaurants for lunch while waiting for the race to arrive this afternoon.

Meals: Breakfast. Lunch is provided by the organisers for Bupa Challenger riders.

Saturday 23 January – Stage 5 – McLaren Vale to Willunga Hill (151.5km)

TODAY IN THE RACE
Date: Saturday 23 January 2016
Start and finish: McLaren Vale to Willunga Hill
Start time: 11.10am (Main Road, near Tatachilla Road)
Finish time: 3.02pm ETA, Willunga Hill
Subaru King of the Mountain: Willunga Hill
iiNet Sprint locations: The Esplanade, Snapper Point (2 sprints)
Powerade Hydration Station: Main Road Willunga at Kell Street
Race distance: 151.5km

Today’s TDU stage heads back to the Fleurieu Peninsula. This region boasts that it “has it all”, so we should be in for a contrasting days racing and riding. For the 5th year running the cyclists will finish stage 5 at the top of Old Willunga Hill after two ascents of the challenging Subaru King of the Mountain climb. Over the previous few years we have been treated to some of the most exciting TDU stages and should be another spectacular finish. 2014 saw the popular Sky rider, Richie Porte, show his climbing prowess on Willunga Hill winning the stage, with Simon Gerrans finishing 3rd and taking the race lead by one second over Cadel Evans. In 2015 Richie Porte was back in the mix as he took a spectacular stage win over Rohan Dennis by 9 seconds and narrowly missed taking the overall lead of the Tour Down Under by a mere 2 seconds!

We’ll probably take things a bit easier today, after yesterday’s BUPA ride. We will offer a couple of ride options today. The main ride will be a 60km ride from our hotel, via the race start in McLaren Vale, to the race finish on Willunga Hill. There is also an option if we arrive at Willunga Hill in time to do a lap of the 22km race loop down to Willunga and back to the hill top finish.

On arrival at Willunga Hill you’ll be provided with a delicious Gourmet BBQ picnic lunch and cold drinks right at the finish line on Old Willunga Hill where the race passes twice and where the race finish will be! We will have plenty of time to socialise and relax in this lovely bush setting while we wait for the race to arrive.

After the excitement of the race finish and having eaten our fill at lunch you’ll have the option of returning to the hotel in the bus, or if you feel up to it the 60km ride down from Willunga Hill to Adelaide.

This day is always a highlight of the trip with our great position near the finish line and a gourmet BBQ lunch..

Non Cyclists: Travel to McLaren Vale this morning to see the stage start, then continue on to Willunga Hill to meet the cyclists for lunch. You will have time to walk down Willunga Hill and enjoy the atmosphere on the huge crowds on the climb.

Tonight is the Legends’ Night Dinner (optional extra).

Tonight the Santos Tour Down Under rolls out the red carpet and gives cycling fans the chance to glam up, celebrate and see cycling champions honoured at the annual Legends Night Dinner. This is a unique opportunity to see the big names of cycling and enjoy a great night out. The event is normally hosted by popular commentators Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen. Special guests for this year’s event will be announced at a later date.

Venue: Adelaide Convention Centre
Time: from 7.30pm

If you are going to the Legends Dinner this evening we will transfer you to the venue at 6.30pm from outside the hotel. Taxis are available for you to return when you wish.

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch

Sunday 24 January – Be Safe Be Seen MAC Stage 6 – Adelaide

TODAY IN THE RACE
Date: Sunday 24 January 2016
Start and finish: King William Road, Adelaide
Start time: 1.30pm
Finish time: 3.30pm ETA
Subaru King of the Mountain: Montefiore Hill, near Pennington Terrace
iiNet Sprint locations: King William Road (2 sprints at Finish Arch)
Powerade Hydration Station: King William Road, at Finish Arch
Race distance: 90km (20 laps of 4.5km loop)

This is the last official day of our trip. You can depart at any time during the day today and we will provide you with a transfer to Adelaide airport from our hotel. For those of you departing later in the day there is the chance to see the final stage of the 2016 Santos Tour Down Under in the streets of Adelaide.

Today’s stage is usually full of action, as it is the last chance for race glory and where all of the classifications will be decided. There are plenty of opportunities to see the racing as the riders hurtle around laps of the street circuit, taking in the view of Adelaide’s city skyline. You can see all of the action on the Big Screen and there are areas to enjoy local food, wine and entertainment. After the race are the presentations where you’ll have a chance to take a last few photos of the winners to show all your friends and club mates when you get home.

With the race circuit on our doorstep the plan for this morning is to do a lap or two around the street circuit of today’s stage early this morning(subject to road being open), followed by a leisurley ride along the beaches of Adelaide, before returning to the hotel for breakfast. After we return from our ride the rest of the morning is free until we go to see the final stage this afternoon.

If you have decided to stay on tonight and would like us to book you a room please add it to your cart when making your trip booking in the Reservations Form below.

Non Cyclists: A leisurely morning start with time to read the Sunday papers in bed if you like! We will head down to see the final stage this afternoon.
